Purchasing a recumbent introduces you to an interesting variety of wheels, tires, and tube sizes.  You can't just order any old 16" or 20" tire/wheel.  Manufacturers spec their bents with different sizes (heights) of 16" and 20" to achieve the handling characteristics and looks they planned for on the drawing board.
Before ordering a new tire/wheel, look on the sidewall of the old tire or the sticker on your rim and look for one of the numbers below:

bullet

16" :  305 or 349

bullet

20":  406 or 451  (Continental Gran Prix and Schwalbe Stelvio don't follow this rule)

bullet

24":  540

bullet

26":  559 and 650

bullet

27" or 700c

As you can see from the measurements above, there is an easy two inch difference in rim height for each of the 16" or 20" sizes.  Trying to shoe horn a 406 tire onto a 451 rim will increase your vocabulary and do nasty things to the tire bead!
